Situation
The interrupted flow for cyclists in routes towards the central station in Enschede. This causes more use of motorized vehicles instead of the bicycle or train.
What If ..
The actual problem is.... cyclists are discouraged to bike to the train station, because cars interrupt their flow and it feels unsafe. A start-up incentivized by the municipality: What if there was a reward system for those who choose to bike to the station? Government: What if there was complete separation of cars and bikes, on different roads completely? Government: What if all bike lanes were above the car-roads, or there was an F35 system everywhere in the city? Student: What if everyone walked everywhere instead? Young Cyclist: What if everyone now uses electric bikes so cars and cyclists are equal? Young Cyclist: What if the train system becomes irrelevant because other infrastructures were improved upon? Student: What if we had more train stations in the city? What if boom gates were introduced to stop cars/cyclists from not following rules? Chosen: What if we had trams within the city?
Emerging frictions
- Resistance top change - Complaints about noise - Initial learing curve - More traffic - Environmental impact - Less bikes/cars would be used
Provocative statement
Are cycling, driving, and taking the bus really the only methods of transports worth exploring? Or are there more opportunities out there to increase mobility?
